"Anybody should be able to make a good movie if they spend $20 million the way they did on The Exorcist. Comparatively speaking, for what we spent on it, Abby was probably a better picture than The Exorcist." (William Girdler, The Louisville Times, 1977)
William Girdler's Abby is perhaps the greatest B-movie you've never seen. The low-budget Exorcist-inspired blaxploitation feature earned $9 million in 1974, making it one of that decade's most successful Black-genre films. The superb cast included Carol Speed (The Mack), William Marshall (Blacula), Terry Carter (Foxy Brown), Austin Stoker (Battle for the Planet of the Apes), and Juanita Moore (Imitation of Life).
This month, William Girdler.com salutes Bill's cheesy masterwork with four special features. First up, Abby herself (Carol Speed) shares her thoughts on the film in a wonderful interview. Filled with new movie clips and great photos, it's a must-read for any blaxploitation fan.
Next, Girdler's best friend and partner J. Patrick Kelly offers amazing revelations regarding the making of Abby. Few people were closer to Bill than Pat Kelly, so this mini-interview is a prize.
Coming later this month, look for the theatrical trailer to Abby, as well as a special article which delves into the shady past of the Abby video bootlegs.
For your convenience, all noteworthy Abby articles and movie clips are gathered on this page so you can experience Abby in all her demonic glory. New content will be added throughout the month, so keep checking back!!!
